August 25 Hurricane Irene New York News Special Report Uncategorized Weather

On the morning of Thursday, August 25, 2011, Mayor Bloomberg updated the City of New York on evacuation contingencies and preparation for the coming Hurricane Irene.  The hurricane has been moving from the Bahamas to the East Coast of the United States and is predicted to pass through New York City this coming Sunday, August 28.

Mayor Bloomberg informed New Yorkers of the steps they can take to prepare for Hurricane Irene.  They are as follows:
1. Find out if you live in an evacuation zone by going to www.nyc.gov, or by calling 311 and giving your address.  If you live in an evacuation zone, you should contact your family and friends to make sure they are aware of where they should go.

2. Stock up on emergency supplies.  This includes water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, medication, essential documents, and an extra set of car and house keys.

3. The Mayor also informed us of the precautions the city has taken.

• The Department of Environmental Protection is working to clean out the 143,000 catch basins in New York City.
• The Command Center at the Office of Emergency Management has been activated.
• They are checking in regularly with the National Weather Service.
• They are in constant communication with State officials and agencies, coordinating needed resources.
• Steps have been taken by the heads of the City’s Emergency Response agencies to guarantee that they have the right staff for the possible dilemma.  These include the heads of the NYPD, FDNY, OEM (Office of Emergency Management), Transportation, Health, and Buildings.
• The Police Department has placed 50 small boats in station houses in low-lying areas and have helicopters and 33 police boats prepared.
• Public hospitals have checked their generators and made sure they have the medical supplies and food needed, in case deliveries cannot be made.
• The Parks Department is prepared to handle emergency tree conditions.
• The Department of Environmental Protection will have extra sewer maintenance crews.
• The Sanitation Department will be paying special attention to litter conditions near storm sewers.
• The Department of Transportation has organized crews to 26 flood locations to clear debris from catch basins.
• Homeless New Yorkers will be able to enter any Homeless Services facility
Bloomberg has also given some tips to keep in mind if the Hurricane is severe:
• Stay inside—whether it be a car or a building
• Check on neighbors who live alone
• Be cautious if you decide to go swimming; if there is no lifeguard or the beach is closed, DO NOT go swimming
For more information, the Mayor has urged us to contact 311 or visit the Office of Emergency Management’s hurricane readiness guide at www.nyc.gov.
