Read moreBordering Todt Hill above Richmond Road is the Dongan Hills Colony, a prestigious enclave of rolling hills in the Mid-Island section of Staten Island. Included in the extravagant homes populating the quiet, desirable area, is the single-family country-style Ranch located at 76 Upton Street. The home is quite unique, as its exterior is made completely of brick. The 4,000 square-feet home sits on an 80 x 100 square-feet area of land, which includes well-trimmed front and rear yards, making quite an impression.
The trim work and sophisticated, traditional interior of the home give it a very inviting atmosphere. Just as well, the natural light given off by way of skylights, in addition to the wood-burning fireplaces, help to radiate the warm and inviting feel of the house. As you enter the house, you will find a large entry foyer, a magnificent family room, a
laundry area, and a full bathroom. When you get to the tremendous kitchen, you will find that it is both traditional and modern, with stainless-steel appliances and plenty of room for a large family or guests. As you exit the kitchen into the large dining room, you will find that it, too, can host quite a number of people. Here, you will find a staircase leading to the second floor. Once you reach the second floor, you will find a loft-style living room, which overlooks the dining room on the first floor. In addition, bus lines and the Staten Island Railway are nearby, which can take you to the St. George Ferry Terminal to take the ferry into Manhattan.
Read moreThe neighborhood of Dongan Hills Colony, or “the Colony” as referred to by native Staten Islanders is another one of Staten Island’s greatest little secrets. Ironically though it was one of the first neighborhoods in Staten Island to have a surge of development after World War II in the 1950s.
Located within the valley between Todt Hill and Emerson Hill, and above Richmond Road, the Colony sits in somewhat seclusion compared to other Staten Island neighborhoods because of its only segue being roadways from the southern side. The natural noise buffers from the hills have also made it one of the quietest of Staten Island communities. Although considered a valley, there are rolling hills within the colony that allows for homes on top of these hills to have a sprawling view that spans from the New York Harbor to Sandy Hook, New Jersey.
There are both one and two family homes built here, but you will only find detached homes in Dongan Hills Colony. The popular assumption for those who know about the Colony is that there are exclusively luxury homes in the area. Another one of the Colony’s great secrets is that in addition to some of its beautiful mansions, there are also moderately priced homes as well as some that fall in between.
Our latest listing at 145 Mason Street is just such an example of a home that falls in between. Priced at $769,000 this four bedroom colonial home boasts close to 2,700 square feet of living space and a 4,300 property size in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Staten Island.
With a country style feel to it, this home successfully combines the traditional decor with modern amenities. Upon pulling up to the home you will find a well-manicured front lawn combined with new pavers in front of the garage as well as new siding stonework, new windows throughout and a traditional colonial front porch just waiting for a quaint rocking bench.
Upon entering the home and to the left of the first floor entryway you will find a very large living room with french doors leading to the formal dining room, both with beautifully done hardwood flooring and crown molding. To the right, you will find a powder room and the entryway to a large eat-in kitchen complete with Corian countertops and stainless steel appliances. In the back of the first floor is also a nice-sized family room with a skylight and glass sliding doors leading to the tiered decked yard with an above-ground 12 by 24 foot pool. The first floor also has a side foyer which leads you to the side door, garage and the basement of this home, which is a fully finished basement with high ceilings and two rooms in addition to a laundry area. The basement also has a brand new full bath.
Let’s head up to the second floor of this home where there are a few things that stand out for me. The first thing you will notice when coming up the stairs is the roomy and openness of the second floor hallway, which is a rarity in many homes. Another rarity in this home is the size of the bedrooms. Most older colonial homes were built with small bedrooms in order to save money heating the rooms. It was said that back in the colonial era you could boast of how much money you had by the size of your bedrooms. Three of the four bedrooms in this home boasts approximately 12 x 12 feet of space, which is considered large for even a newly constructed home. The only exception is the fourth and final bedroom, the master bedroom which of course is larger than the others. Two of the four bedrooms also have beautiful harbor views that not all of the homes in the colony are lucky enough to have. The recently redone master bath is also a sight to see. With entryways from both the main hall and the master bedroom, this four piece bath hosts a large ornate vanity topped with granite, a Jacuzzi tub. A beautifully glass enclosed shower and tumbled stone throughout. Just a nice little perk to come home to after a hard day’s work.
From its traditional style, to its modern amenities, to its serene and beautiful setting, our latest listing in Dongan Hills Colony at 145 Mason Street is one of Staten Island’s greatest secrets, we at RealEstateSINY.com are letting out.
